JARRED SHEIN : SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
Based in Sydney, Australia, Jarred Shein balances a busy family and professional life with a passion for endurance sport and adventure. He’s a husband and dad to two energetic kids, a 9-year-old daughter and a 7-year-old son, and works for a medical device company that develops technology to treat sleep apnea.
Like many endurance athletes, Jarred’s training often fits around work, family life and early mornings, making the most of every opportunity to get outside and move.
The Endurance Journey
Jarred’s endurance background began with triathlon, something he had been involved in for a number of years. As his dad jokingly says, he’s always been a “TRY-athlete.”
Over time, though, the appeal of road riding and running began to fade, and Jarred found himself drawn more and more to the bush and the adventure that comes with it.
That shift eventually led him toward one of the most iconic endurance events in the world – the Kathmandu Coast to Coast.
Preparing for such a unique race from across the Tasman meant he needed the right support, which is what brought him to TEAMCPNZ.
“I needed help to work out how to prepare for Coast to Coast – and support during the event itself.”
Training Life
Jarred’s favourite sessions happen early in the morning, when the world is still quiet.
One of the highlights is interval sessions on the surf ski as the sun rises.
“The beautiful sunrises almost make you forget about the bull sharks.”
Unlike many athletes, Jarred doesn’t dread any particular session — in fact, he enjoys them all.
“The more they hurt, the better.”
Coffee, however, comes after training, not before.
“How people drink coffee before a long session I don’t know – I’d need the toilet 15 minutes in!”
After a solid workout, Jarred’s go-to recovery meal is chilli scrambled eggs.
The Big Moment
One of Jarred’s proudest endurance achievements so far has been completing the Kathmandu Coast to Coast.
The race is known for its demanding mix of mountain running, cycling and kayaking, and finishing such an iconic event remains a standout moment in his endurance journey.
Looking Ahead
The adventure continues, with several exciting challenges on Jarred’s calendar.
He’s currently preparing for:
-
Mount Solitary Ultra in the Blue Mountains
-
UTMB Kosciuszko in November
But beyond individual races, Jarred is increasingly drawn to big adventure-style challenges.
Two goals that sit high on the list are competing in The Doctor, a famous ocean kayak race in Western Australia, and completing a north-to-south journey across a country.
In fact, the planning has already started for a 10-day gravel adventure, mapping out a route that combines endurance, exploration and freedom.
The TEAMCPNZ Difference
For Jarred, being part of TEAMCPNZ is about the support and the atmosphere.
“TEAMCPNZ always has your back and always brings great positive vibes.”
That sense of encouragement and community makes a huge difference when training for big endurance goals.
Advice for New Athletes
Jarred’s advice for anyone starting their endurance journey is simple and practical:
Don’t skip leg day in the gym, and make sure you stretch to look after your body.
Strong foundations help keep you moving and injury-free for the long haul.
Quick Fire
Sunrise or sunset training? Sunrise, non-negotiable
Gravel or road? Gravel
