STEVEN MUFF : ROLLESTON, NEW ZEALAND
Based in Rolleston, Steven Muff balances family life, full-time work and endurance sport with plenty of enthusiasm for adventure. He lives with his incredibly supportive wife Natasha, their two sons Cohen and Wyatt, and two cats who no doubt keep life interesting at home.
Steven works full-time for ARL, a workplace he says has also been very supportive of his racing goals. Outside of structured training and events, he loves camping, tramping and biking with the kids, making the most of every opportunity to get out and explore New Zealand’s incredible backyard.
The Endurance Journey
For Steven, the real turning point came during Covid.
While his wife continued working, Steven found himself at home, and as he puts it, “got fit, so the wife says.” What started as a lifestyle shift soon became the spark for something much bigger. He lost 20kg, worked hard, and began building toward endurance goals that had long been sitting in the background.
Sport had always been part of Steven’s life. He had grown up active, enjoyed running for as long as he could remember, and had also spent time road cycling while serving in the Navy in Auckland.
But it was this period of focused change that truly kicked off the dream.
Joining TEAMCPNZ
Steven joined TEAMCPNZ after coming across the informative website and hearing strong recommendations.
That decision connected him with a community of athletes and coaches who shared his passion for challenge, progression and enjoying the ride along the way.
Training Life
When it comes to favourite sessions, Steven is clear:
Hill run intervals.
He loves the challenge, the intensity, and the feeling of getting stronger on the climbs.
The session he enjoys a little less? Yoga.
Coffee is definitely an after-training reward, and when it comes to post-session fuel, a chocolate protein shake is hard to beat.
The Big Moments
Steven has already had some standout moments in endurance sport.
Among the achievements he’s most proud of are winning his age group at Challenge Wanaka Multi in 2025 and then improving his performance again at Coast to Coast 2026 by beating his previous time.
Those moments reflect not just fitness, but consistency, hard work and the confidence that comes from sticking with the process.
Looking Ahead
Steven has no shortage of exciting goals on the horizon.
Top of the list is Coast to Coast 2027, along with defending his form and aiming to win his age group again at Challenge Multi in October 2026.
He’s also looking to nail an ultra and take on another adventure race.
Longer term, dream events include the Kepler Challenge and perhaps even an overseas adventure race.
For Steven, endurance sport is about more than just one finish line — it’s about continuing to find new challenges and seeing what’s possible.
The TEAMCPNZ Difference
What Steven enjoys most about being part of TEAMCPNZ is the people.
“Everyone is super friendly, happy to help and full of great advice.”
For him, it’s the coaches, the smiles, the support and the friendships that make TEAMCPNZ special.
It’s a place where athletes can grow, be encouraged, and share the journey with others who understand both the highs and the hard days.
Advice for New Athletes
Steven’s advice is simple and full of honesty:
Just start.
Endurance sport is a rollercoaster. There will be amazing days and there will be tough ones too. But that’s all part of the experience.
“Jump in, buckle up and enjoy the ride. There will be fabulous days and bloody ugly days, but there is always another chance to try again and feel success.”
